BACKGROUND
Dr. Marketa Dolan received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Syracuse University. Her graduate research focused on understanding how psychosocial factors (such as life stress, ways of coping) contribute to the maintenance of substance use disorders. She completed both her predoctoral clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle.
Dr. Dolan has specialized training and expertise in providing evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure for PTSD, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Dr. Dolan places emphasis on cultivating a strong therapeutic relationship in which meaningful change can occur.
MY APPROACH TO THERAPY
My work centers around helping adults who are experiencing a range of problems, including anxiety, grief, PTSD (and other trauma-related concerns), depression, relationship stress, life transitions, and substance use, including nicotine. I am committed to providing evidence-based treatments while taking a client-centered approach and enlisting the power of the therapeutic relationship to promote meaningful change. I approach each client with authenticity, curiosity, and humor, and collaboratively work with clients to determine individualized treatment plans.
A strong therapeutic relationship, characterized by authenticity and mutual understanding, provides an essential foundation from which healing and growth can occur. As such, I strive to foster such a relationship by offering genuine caring, an open mind, and a non-judgmental stance to each person’s experience.
I believe that clients are the experts on themselves. Fundamentally, my aim is to help those with whom I work to connect to and trust their inner wisdom so that they can grow in ways that reduce suffering, improve quality of life, and engender a sense of agency and mastery in the world.
I invite my clients to be curious with me about themselves, their beliefs, and behaviors, including a thoughtful consideration of what is serving them and what may be getting in the way of living the life they want to be living. From there, I work collaboratively with clients to determine whether, what, and how they wish to change. Because change is often difficult, I am committed to meeting clients where they are in the process of change and serving as a guide who is both gentle and direct on that path.
The specific interventions I use are primarily grounded in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and I implement them flexibly to meet the specific needs of each client. My approach also borrows from Interpersonal Psychotherapy, which aims to reduce distress by improving relationships.
